Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 17, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Symwave ("Symwave", "we", "us", or "our") handles information when you use the Symwave website, web application, browser extension, and related services.

Symwave is designed to help users read and listen to digital content using features such as text-to-speech, synchronized text highlighting, automatic scrolling, document reading, and saved content.

1. Information we collect

The information Symwave handles depends on which features you use.

Account information

If you create an account, we may store information needed to identify and operate your account, such as your email address, account identifier, authentication information, trial and access pass status, and account preferences.

Usage information

Optional free-core validation is off by default and can be enabled or stopped in Settings for each local workspace. For up to 90 days after opting in, we receive only counts of successful document opening, listening, and return days, with a UTC day and activation or enrollment cohort day. No document contents, names, URLs, file IDs, account identifiers, voice choices, or diagnostic logs are included. We honor Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. Stopping removes the local measurement state; already received anonymous counts cannot be linked back for deletion.

The application writes these counts to its existing server logs. Hosting and network providers still handle IP addresses and technical connection data to serve requests; the metrics payload and application metric log exclude them. Acquisition statistics use Cloudflare Web Analytics where enabled, separately from these opt-in product counts.

Saved content and documents

Documents, notes, screenshots, generated audio, and local study records remain in your principal-scoped browser storage. Importing a document does not upload it to Symwave. Export and backups are explicit local actions. An account does not provide cloud document storage or cross-device document sync. Browser storage can be cleared or lost; keep backups of important data.

Billing and access pass information

If you use paid Symwave features, we may store information needed to manage your access pass, such as your plan, entitlement status, payment status, transaction references, and billing-related account information.

Payment credentials such as full credit card numbers may be handled directly by a payment provider rather than by Symwave.

2. Chrome extension and webpage content

The Symwave browser extension is designed for the single purpose of helping users read web content using text-to-speech, synchronized highlighting, automatic scrolling, and closely related reading functionality.

To provide these features, the extension may access the text and structure of the webpage that you choose to read.

Webpage content accessed for this reading functionality is processed locally in your browser and is not sent to Symwave servers merely because you use the extension to read a webpage.

Symwave does not use the extension to build a history of the websites you visit, track your browsing activity across unrelated websites, or collect webpage content for advertising or profiling purposes.

If you separately and intentionally use a Symwave feature that saves or uploads content to your account, that saved content may be sent to and stored by the Symwave service as described in this Privacy Policy.

3. How we use information

We use information handled by Symwave only for purposes related to providing, maintaining, securing, and improving the service. These purposes include:

  • Providing account authentication and access.
  • Providing text-to-speech and reading functionality.
  • Maintaining your saved documents and content.
  • Synchronizing account state and preferences where applicable.
  • Measuring optional activation and return counts without document contents.
  • Preserving earlier payment and purchased-entitlement records.
  • Detecting abuse, fraud, and security issues.
  • Diagnosing errors and maintaining service reliability.
  • Improving Symwave's user-facing features.

4. Browser permissions

The Symwave browser extension may request browser permissions necessary to provide its reading functionality.

Permissions that allow Symwave to access webpage content are used only when necessary to identify, process, highlight, scroll, or read content for the user-facing features of the extension.

Symwave does not use browser permissions to collect information unrelated to the extension's reading functionality or related operational requirements.

5. Local processing

Some information used by the Symwave extension is processed entirely on your device.

In particular, webpage content used by the extension for reading, highlighting, and automatic scrolling is processed locally in your browser unless you explicitly choose a separate feature that saves or uploads that content.

Local processing means that the information may be accessed by the extension in order to perform a feature without being transmitted to Symwave's servers.

6. Sharing of information

Symwave does not sell your personal information or browsing data.

We do not transfer user data to advertising networks, data brokers, or information resellers, and we do not use data obtained through the extension for personalized, interest-based, or retargeted advertising.

Information may be shared with service providers that perform infrastructure or operational functions necessary to provide Symwave, such as hosting, database infrastructure, authentication, payment processing, or similar technical services.

These providers may process information only to the extent necessary for the services they provide to Symwave and subject to the applicable agreements and privacy obligations governing those services.

We may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with applicable law, enforce our agreements, investigate fraud or abuse, protect the security of Symwave or its users, or respond to a valid legal process.

7. Human access to user content

Symwave personnel do not ordinarily read your private documents, saved content, or other user content.

Human access may occur only when reasonably necessary and permitted, such as when you specifically ask us to inspect content in order to provide support, when necessary to investigate security or abuse, when required by law, or when information has been aggregated or anonymized for legitimate internal operations.

8. Data retention

We retain account, saved content, usage, entitlement, and related service information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide Symwave, maintain your account, comply with applicable obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and enforce our agreements.

Information that is processed only locally by the browser extension is not retained on Symwave's servers unless you explicitly use a feature that transmits or saves that information to your account.

9. Data security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information handled by Symwave against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.

User data transmitted between the Symwave extension, website, and Symwave services is sent using secure encrypted connections where transmission occurs.

No system can guarantee absolute security, but we work to limit data access and collection to what is necessary to operate the service.

10. Your choices and rights

You may stop the extension from accessing webpages by disabling or uninstalling the extension or by changing its browser permissions.

You may also request access to, correction of, or deletion of information associated with your Symwave account. Depending on your location, applicable law may provide additional privacy rights.

11. Children's privacy

Symwave is not intentionally designed to collect personal information from children where doing so would require parental consent under applicable law.

If you believe a child has provided personal information to Symwave in a manner that should not have occurred, contact us so that we can review and, where appropriate, delete the information.

12. Chrome Web Store Limited Use

Symwave's use of information obtained through the Chrome extension is limited to providing or improving the extension's disclosed user-facing reading functionality and related operational purposes.

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Symwave does not use or transfer data obtained through the extension for personalized advertising, creditworthiness or lending purposes, data brokerage, or other purposes unrelated to the extension's disclosed functionality.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Symwave evolves or as legal, technical, or operational requirements change.

If an update materially changes how the Symwave extension collects, uses, or shares user data, we will provide appropriate notice before the new practices apply where required.

The date shown at the top of this page indicates when this Privacy Policy was most recently updated.
